The 30 ARX - Serious 30 cal. AR-15 Power!

The 30 ARX has a proper case size and length that allows it to work very well with many 30 cal. bullets loaded at magazine length while still taking full advantage of its case capacity for maximum power and velocity.  Shown are two 30 ARX cartridges loaded with the Nosler 125 gr. Ballistic tip hunting bullet and with the Sierra 150 gr. BT hunting bullet

Water Case Capacity Difference

38 gr. vs 24.3 gr.
No Contest!

The 30 ARX has 57% more case capacity than the 300 AAC Blackout

The 30 ARX is a cartridge designed for use in an AR-15, and it uses commercial 6.5 Grendel brass necked up to 30 cal.

The case length and chamber design of the 30 ARX is ideal and it allows the use of many of the favorite 30 cal. bullets magazine fed out of an AR-15 and backed by some real power!

Brass is easy to make with a simple neck up process. Neck it up, load it and go shoot!  See the video below on making brass.

The 30 ARX has the case capacity to run the 125 gr. bullets easily in the 2500-2600 fps range and the 150 gr. bullets in the 2400-2500 fps range.  See the chrono results below.

The 30 ARX is also a great hunting round and it has serious knockdown power with the 150 gr. 30 cal. bullets running in the 2500 fps range!

Above:  This 30 ARX upper features a 16", 1:8" twist barrel, our DPMS Low Pro upper receiver with a side charging handle, black vented hand guard and a thread protector covering the 5/8" x 24 muzzle threads (that allows for the mounting of a suppressor, muzzle brake or other muzzle attachment that mounts to that common muzzle threading).

What we like about the 30 ARX cartridge:

The 30 ARX cartridge is a simple neck up of the 6.5 Grendel brass to 30 cal.  The OAL of the case is perfect for use with many popular 30 cal. bullets and they are able to be loaded so that they are also suitable for magazine feeding.   The case has sufficient case capacity to push the bullets well, accurately, and fast even at moderate chamber pressures.  The case has around a 38 gr. water capacity.

- The case has an OAL that works perfectly for magazine feeding with a variety of 30 cal. Bullets.

- It has adequate case capacity to run many of the 30 cal. bullets well, fast and accurately.  With the high pressure case capabilities of the 6.5 Grendel brass, the cartridge can muster performance as good or better than the venerable 30-30 Winchester - - all from and AR-15 semi auto platform.

- An excellent hunting cartridge with serious knockdown power with bullets like the 150 gr. 30 cal. bullets running in the 2500 fps range.

- You can run some of the bigger long range bullets single load if you want to.

- The 6.5 Grendel base brass is excellent and strong brass and is readily available!

- The neck up process is very easy - - lube the inside of the necks of 6.5 Grendel brass, run the brass through your re-size die - - done - - load it up and go shoot!

- Good case capacity for top velocities with barrels 20" and under.

- There are many accurate and consistent loads.

- Works well with a lot of commonly available powders suitable for the smaller rifle cartridges.

- Magazines are available that work flawlessly with the cartridge

The 30 ARX - easy to make!

The 30 ARX cartridge is easy to make, just take 6.5 Grendel brass cases, run them through your resize die, load them and shoot them - No neck turning - No Trimming - Not Complicated!

Suitable powders for the 30 ARX
These are some of the powders that we found to work well with the 30 ARX:

     - Hodgdon H4198 (Stick powder) - Not IMR 4198
     - Reloader 7 & Norma 200 (Stick Powder)
     - AA1680 (Ball Powder)
     - Vihtavouri N130 (Now Discontinued by VV)
     - Accurate LT-32 (Burn rate a little on the slow side - takes space up in the case)

*** SAFETY NOTE ON POWDERS: We do not recommend powders with a faster burn rate than those listed above, as faster powders had a tendency to "pressure spike" in testing (i.e. small increases in powder charge yielded large increases in pressure - very jumpy).

*** NOTE on powders: Hodgdon H4198 is part of Hodgdon's "Extreme" line of powders.  In tests H4198 seems to deliver more consistent results over a wider variety of temperatures.  As powders go, H4198 seems to also deliver the best velocity relative to pressure.  The top three powders on the list above are all excellent powders for the 30 ARX.

Load Testing and Load Data for the 30 ARX:

Chrono results (tested in Pennsylvania):

Magazine Fed results (i.e. bullets loaded at an OAL suitable for magazines)

Note on barrel lengths: Velocity with the 30 ARX maxes out around 22".
For 16" barrels figure a decrease in velocity of approximately 150 fps (from 22" barrel).  Different bullets may exhibit more or less velocity drop in shorter barrels.

30 ARX Chambered Upper with 24" barrel with mid-length gas system.
Testing revealed no substantial difference in velocity for barrels longer than 22".
Testing revealed no substantial difference in velocity for twist rates between 1:8" and 1:15".

Note:  All loads used CCI BR-4 primers and Lapua 6.5 Grendel brass necked up to 30 Cal and all loads shot magazine fed.

31 gr. Norma 200, Sierra 125 gr GameKing Hunting Bullet @ 2.155" OAL - 2616 fps  - no pressure issues

It appears that there is still margin to increase the max Norma 200 powder charge up to 31.5 gr or maybe 32 gr since there were no pressure issues with any of the above loads

28 gr. Norma 200, Sierra 150 gr BT Hunting Bullet @ 2.240" OAL - 2348 fps  - no pressure issues
29 gr. Norma 200, Sierra 150 gr BT Hunting Bullet @ 2.240" OAL - 2431 fps  - no pressure issues
30 gr. Norma 200, Sierra 150 gr BT Hunting Bullet @ 2.240" OAL - 2508 fps  - max load - pressure signs

Loads with LT-30 (New in 2015 an Accurate/Western Powders powder):

30 gr. LT-30, Sierra 150 gr BT Hunting Bullet @ 2.240" OAL - 2500 fps  - no pressure issues**

** Note: The load just above with 30gr of LT-30 and the Sierra 150gr BT Hunting Bullet is compressed and there is no
additional room in the case to add more powder.

Loads with AA 1680 (Ball Powder):

28 gr. AA 1680, Nosler 125 gr Ballistic Tip Hunting Bullet @ 2.260" OAL - 2497 fps  - no pressure issues
28.7 gr. AA 1680, Nosler 125 gr Ballistic Tip Hunting Bullet @ 2.260" OAL - 2549 fps  - no pressure issues

28 gr. AA 1680, Sierra 150 gr BT Hunting Bullet @ 2.240" OAL - 2427 fps  - max load - pressure signs

Loads with H335 (Ball Powder):***

***Note: H335 is generally a slow powder (in terms of burn rate) for practical use in the 30ARX; however, since it is
readily available during these times of powder shortages it does have utility because it is compact and works well with
          the heavier 150gr bullets.

30 gr. H335, Nosler 150 gr Partition Hunting Bullet @ 2.260" OAL - 2162 fps  - no pressure signs
31 gr. H335, Nosler 150 gr Partition Hunting Bullet @ 2.260" OAL - 2221 fps  - no pressure signs
32 gr. H335, Nosler 150 gr Partition Hunting Bullet @ 2.260" OAL - 2290 fps  - no pressure signs
33 gr. H335, Nosler 150 gr Partition Hunting Bullet @ 2.260" OAL - 2351 fps  - no pressure signs**

**Note: The load just above with 33gr of H335 and the Nosler 150gr Partition Hunting Bullet is compressed and there is no
additional room in the case to add more powder; however, this 33gr load was very accurate.

Loads with N130 (Now a discontinued VV powder) :

28 gr. N130, Nosler 125 gr Ballistic Tip Hunting Bullet @ 2.260" OAL - 2388 fps  - no pressure issues
29 gr. N130, Nosler 125 gr Ballistic Tip Hunting Bullet @ 2.260" OAL - 2463 fps  - no pressure issues

28 gr. N130, Sierra 150 gr BT Hunting Bullet @ 2.240" OAL - 2331 fps  - no pressure issues
29 gr. N130, Sierra 150 gr BT Hunting Bullet @ 2.240" OAL - 2395 fps  - no pressure issues

It appears that there is still margin to increase the max N130 powder charge up to 30 gr since there were
no pressure issues with any of the above loads

Loads with LT-32:

28 gr. LT-32, Sierra 125 gr GameKing Hunting Bullet @ 2.155" OAL - 2314 fps  - no pressure issues
29 gr. LT-32, Sierra 125 gr GameKing Hunting Bullet @ 2.155" OAL - 2392 fps  - no pressure issues

LT-32 powder is bulky for the size of the case.  It shoots well but you will run out of room in the case before you will get top velocities.

--------------------------------

30 ARX Chambered Upper with 16" barrel with carbine-length gas system and 1:8" twist barrel.

Note:  All loads used CCI BR-4 primers and Lapua 6.5 Grendel brass necked up to 30 Cal. and all loads shot magazine fed.

Load with H4198:

28 gr. H4198, Nosler 125 gr Ballistic Tip Hunting Bullet @ 2.260" OAL - 2304 fps  - no pressure issues

It appears that there is still margin to increase the max H4198 powder charge up for the 125 gr. Nosler bullet up
to 30 gr. since there were no pressure issues with the above load and it was a moderate load only.

29 gr. H4198, Sierra 150 gr BT Hunting Bullet @ 2.240" OAL - 2246 fps  - no pressure issues

It appears that there is still margin to increase the max H4198 powder charge up for the 150 gr. Sierra bullet up
to 30 gr. since there were no pressure issues with the above load.

Load with AA 1680:

28 gr. AA 1680, Nosler 125 gr Ballistic Tip Hunting Bullet @ 2.260" OAL - 2407 fps  - no pressure issues
